WHO I AM
I am Alisha Sonnier- a public servant, mental health advocate, leader, and visionary who is passionate and dedicated to all thing’s community empowerment, social justice, and liberation.
I was born and raised in Saint Louis, MO, where my calling to serve the community came as natural to me as breathing.
WHAT I DO
Before I was elected as Alderwoman of the 7th Ward in 2023, I was a mental health advocate, helping people connect with services that they needed to improve their mental health. I have always wanted to help people in my community grow and heal, and now I get to do that on a much larger scale as your Alderwoman. I have advocated for workers’ rights and city services that make our lives easier, and I have passed legislation to do things like make it easier to open shelters to help our unhoused neighbors. In everything I do as Alderwoman, my mantra is #ALLNotSome
MY VISION
The reality is that for too many of us making it to eighteen and/or sustaining a healthy and happy family is a luxury. It can sometimes feel that our city has been built only for those who already have a secure and stable place in it - from our lack of investment in youth and families, to our lack of safe and affordable housing, to struggling businesses who are still recovering from a global pandemic. As your alderwoman, I am daring to ask for your continued support in moving our city to do better for all of us.
AS YOUR ALDERWOMAN
Over the course of my two-year term, I hit the ground running and have accomplished a lot in a short amount of time. I have hosted five community town halls, attended over 100 community events and meetings, and hold monthly office hours for constituents to come meet with me and discuss issues that they’re concerned about in our neighborhoods. I have sponsored 24 board bills to make our city a better place to call home, 15 of which were signed into law. Below are some of the accomplishments that I am proudest of.
LEGISLATION
Passed legislation to support our unhoused neighbors by updating the zoning regulations to make it easier to open shelters throughout the city
Passed legislation establishing a mandatory registration process for rental units to hold landlords accountable for maintaining rental properties
Passed the Tax Accountability in Development Act (TADA), which requires any developers who want tax incentives to have paid their current taxes or at least be on a payment plan in order to receive those incentives
Passed legislation regulating the commercial use of private drones after private, for-profit entities were trying to live stream videos of our community without their consent
Passed legislation to make sure that attorneys can access their clients in detention facilities
Supported the expansion of public transportation options, making safer travel routes for pedestrians, and updating infrastructure
We’ve accomplished so much in just two years - and I cannot wait to get back to work for #ALLNotSome with a full four-year term!
Make your voice heard.
As your Seventh Ward Alderperson, it is my mission to represent all voices in our Ward. I want to hear from you.
